(Yesterday in the SpendaYearwithJesus storyline) Jesus confirmed that he was Messiah!<\/p>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, their hopes were shaken by Jesus&#8217; comments about dying and raising.<\/p>\n<p>Exuberance and disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 2013, my brothers and\u00a0their families, my parents, and\u00a0my\u00a0family\u00a0were planning\u00a0to go\u00a0to Orlando. We had taken a trip two years\u00a0before and it was great. So we were excited to get together again.<\/p>\n<p>You can imagine\u00a0our disappointment when my dad called to let us know my mom was not going to be able to make the trip. The fact is, my mom had been under treatment for myeloma cancer for\u00a0almost five years. We thought she was stable, but we were wrong. Our excitement to go to Disneyworld\u00a0turned to concern for my mom&#8217;s condition.<\/p>\n<p>Exuberance and disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0can connect with the disciples&#8217; and Jesus&#8217; experience. We can feel the uncertainty of human experience &#8212;\u00a0both the exuberant uncertainty\u00a0of happy opportunities\u00a0and the weight of\u00a0grief\u00a0in a terminal diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Jesus&#8217; disciple-optimists\u00a0were thinking about implications of Messiah&#8217;s leadership (of course, not without its challenges: dying and raising as a metaphor rather than literal prediction). The disciple-pessimists were probably concerned about\u00a0their future.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, I don&#8217;t think they got much sleep after the news of that day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The disciples felt exuberant.
